Abstract

1,106,107. Centrifugal compressors. SULZER BROS. Ltd. April 6, 1965 [May 11, 1964], No. 14584/65. Heading F1C. The width of the diffuser 8 of a centrifugal compressor is adjustable by means of an axially movable wall 7 which is connected by annular structure 12, 13 to an annular piston 11 operable by hydraulic fluid. A partition 15 sealed by a seal ring 18 relative to a stationary partition 14 divides the space behind the wall 7 into a chamber 17 communicating at 19 with the diffuser outlet and a chamber 16 communicating at 20 with the diffuser inlet (or communicating with the compressor intake). The subdivision into two chambers 16, 17 by the partition 15 is such that the forces exerted by the two different pressures in the chambers counterbalance the force exerted on the wall 7 by the compressed fluid within the diffuser 8.
