Abstract
1,028,254. Cooling gases by direct contact with water. LEUNA-WERKE "WALTER ULBRIGHT." VEBApril 1, 1964, No. 13393/64. Heading F4K. In a process for removing the heat generated when gases are compressed in multi-stage compressors, which uses direct contact between the gases and cooling water, but is so designed as to overcome the problem of water hammer, a pump 9 provides high-pressure cooling water, which is controlled by a throttle valve 10 so that it is sprayed from a sprinkler 5 in a cooler 3 at the same pressure as the gases, which have passed through a pressure pipe 1 of a first compressor stage, via an optional oil separator 2, to cooler 3, containing Raschig rings 4. The gases then pass through a shallow layer of Raschig rings 6, to separate any water particles, and thence, through pipe 8, to a second compressor stage. The water leaves cooler 3 through pipe 11 and is expanded in a degasification tank 12, the gases thus released, if valuable, may be conveyed, through pipe 13, back to the first compressor stage.
