Abstract
516,211. Freezing ground. RODIO, G. July 26, 1938, No. 22221. Convention date, Aug. 16, 1937. [Class 68(i)] In freezing ground by evaporation of liquefied gas, as for shaft-sinking or making foundations in wet ground, the liquid is introduced into each freezing tube through one or more calibrated orifices which supply a predetermined quantity of liquid; for example, the supply to each freezing tube may be effected through one or more interchangeable nozzles or the supply pipes may be constricted. All the freezing tubes may be connected to a discharge tube by which liquid can overflow from one tube to others, the discharge pipes opening at the same height within the tubes. Valves permit isolation of each tube. An insulated reservoir for the liquid may be provided in the pumping plant to give an extra supply to any freezing tube directly or through the discharge pipe. A float-controlled needle valve may control. the supply to each freezing tube. The supply pipes to the tubes may also be connected to a common master pipe, the connections to this pipe and to the discharge pipe preferably being effected through flexible metal tubes. For use in tunnelling, or freezing pit bottoms, substantially horizontal tubes are used and may be supplied through a tube d, Fig. 1, and exhausted through pipe c, a bend b providing .an evaporating chamber. With upwardly or downwardly inclined tubes, the exhaust tube f opens at the highest part of the tube.
