Abstract
641,471. Piezo-electric crystals. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Dec. 23, 1946, No. 37773. Convention date, Aug. 9, 1943. [Class 40 (viii)] A thickness shear mode plate formed from one of the primary phosphates or arsenates of potassium or ammonium has its major faces parallel to one of the crystal axes (as shown, the Z axis) and inclined at 45 degrees to the other two axes) (as shown, the X and Y axes). This orientation gives the largest piezo-electric coefficient and, in the element shown, a minimum coupling with the face-shear mode of motion. The elements, constants of typical examples of which are given, may be provided with deposited electrodes of gold, platinum, aluminium - or silver, and the electrodes may cover only a restricted area of the surface in order to reduce spurious coupling. Frequency adjustment may be effected by nickel-plating. The element may be adapted to oscillate in the fundamental and second order shear modes as disclosed in Specification 554,963.
