1363519 Surface wave devices; oscillators; frequency changers STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 17 Aug 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 39159/71 Headings H3U and H3F Surface wave transducers 2 comprising interdigitated Al electrodes 4 with two or more fingers on a sputtered-on film of ZnO piezoelectric material 3 are mounted on a glass substrate 1 having the property that the change of acoustic surface wave velocity due to change in temperature is substantially balanced by the thermal expansion of the substrate, so that the wave transmit time between given points of the glass is kept within 6 p.p.m./‹ C. between - 30‹ and 80‹ C. The fingers are either above, or below the 1-5 Á thick piezo film, Figs. 3, 2 (not shown), or the fingers and a gold counter electrode (5), Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), may sandwich the piezo film. For suitable choice of substrate glass, the effect of temperature variation of delay due to the transducer structures can also be compensated. The device can be connected between the input and output of a broad band amplifier (not shown), whence the frequency of oscillation depends only on the phase change through the transducers and substrate, leading to an oscillator stable to less than 1 p.p.m. Exemplary transducer dimensions are disclosed.
