Abstract

638,997. Drum brake. KENNY, R. J. April 7, 1948, No. 12503/47. [Class 103 (i)] In a brake device, a hollow rotary element has one or more pairs of internal inclined convergent braking surfaces that are engaged by one or more shoes pivotally mounted on a non- rotary element, each such shoe having convergent braking surfaces correspondingly inclined to those on the rotary element, the arrangement being such that the shoes may be moved to a position clear of the braking surfaces on the rotary element so as to allow the non-rotary element to be withdrawn axially therefrom. For use on an automobile, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the shoes 12 and 13, pivoted at 17, comprise central web plates 14 to which are welded inclined plates 10 and 11 which engage the drum braking surfaces 8 and 9, through friction linings 15, 16. To withdraw the non-rotary parts, the actuating gear 21, 22 is detached before pivoting back the shoes. The braking surfaces may be oppositely inclined as shown in Fig. 4 and both drums and shoes may be fabricated by welding as shown in Fig. 6. A fluid pressure actuated form of the brake for use on a winding drum is also described.
