Abstract

730,053. Disc brakes. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd. Oct. 15, 1953 [Nov. 19, 1952], No. 29249/52. Class 103 (1). In a "spot-type" disc brake, the braking means consists of a fluid-pressure operated cylinder and piston device 1, disposed on one side and adjacent the periphery of the brake disc 2 and with its axis arranged parallel to the axis of the disc, the cylinder of the device 1 being supported by a fixed carrier plate 4 by means of a link 5 pivotally connected to a bifurcated lug 10 mounted on the cylinder and to a second lug 12 provided on the face of the carrier plate. The cylinder 3 carries a clawlike bracket 6 which projects from the cylinder and extends over the periphery of the brake disc 2 and carries a flat pressure plate 7 lined with a pad 8 of friction material. The piston 14 within the cylinder 3 is provided with a rod 15 which extends through the open end of the cylinder and has pivotally connected to it a pressure plate 16 provided with a pad 17 of friction material. At the same pivotal connection, i.e. pin 18, one end of a link 19, which passes through a slot in the wall of the cylinder, is pivotally connected ; the other end of the link being pivotally connected by pin 20 to a lug 21 fixed to a tangential extension 22 of the fixed carrier plate 4. In operation, the application of fluid-pressure to the working chamber 24 through port 23 causes the piston and the cylinder to be moved in opposite directions so that the pads on the pressure plates are forced thereby into clamping or gripping engagement with both sides of the brake disc simultaneously. By varying the perpendicular distances between the axis of the pivot 20 and the plane of the braking surface on which the pressure plate 16 acts, and between the axis of the pivot 20 and a line drawn perpendicularly to the plane of the said braking surface and passing through the axis of the pivot 18, the pressure plate 16 can be arranged, depending upon the direction of rotation of the brake disc to act either in a self-energizing manner so as to increase its frictional engagement with the brake disc, or in a trailing manner so as to assist its disengagement from the disc when the working chamber 24 is exhausted to atmosphere upon release of the brakes.
