Abstract
638,954. Silencing gaseous currents. CULLUM, D. J. W. March 19, 1948, No. 8224. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer for a jet engine under test comprises a conical passage 2 which has a venturi-shaped end 3, having the same diameter as, and which can be brought close to the issuing nozzle 1 of the jet engine. The passage 2 leads to a perforated tube 4 surrounded by sound-absorbing material and an outer casing. A baffling device 5, comprising a hit-and-miss valve or a series of baffles or bends, may be interposed. The passage 2 may be surrounded by a cooling jacket and lined with heat-protecting medium. Water may be injected by adjustable jets or pass through a tube forming a baffle. The cross-section of the passage may be rectangular or circular, and it may be mounted with vertical and lateral adjustment on a wheeled carriage.
