Abstract

664,647. Cooling exhaust gases. CULLUM. D. J. W. June 20, 1950 [June 20, 1949], No. 16332/49. Class 7(ii) The exhaust flames and hot gas stream of a jet propulsion engine are received and conveyed in a conduit a, which may diverge from the inlet b to the outlet c, and means, such as ducts 1-8, 1<SP>1</SP>-8<SP>1</SP> of .aerofoil section mounted transversely of the conduit and opening through the conduit wall, entrain, by the passage of the flames and gases, and deliver, as by rearward openings of the ducts in the vicinity of the conduit axis, cooling air to the core of the stream. The ducts may be axially and angularly spaced and inclined to the conduit axis and be provided with internal air-distributing baffles. The conduit may be of heatresisting material, e.g. metal or fireproof brick. In modifications, the ducts (a) extend inwardly from one side of the conduit and terminate at or near the conduit axis and (b) are disposed as chordal members. The device may be used together with water injection means and combined with noise-suppression apparatus.
