Abstract
967,995. Silencing gaseous currents. P. H. PARKIN. April 26, 1961 [April 13, 1960], No. 13293/60. Heading F1B. Means for attenuating the noise emanating from a source 6 situated above ground level comprises a duct having open input- and output ends 2, 10, and means 3, for locating the input end at or close to the source of noise and means for deflecting the acoustic energy fed into the duct axially to or close to ground level whereby sound in the 150 to 350 cycles per second frequency band is preferentially absorbed by the ground. The inlet 2 is adjusted to the source 6, e.g., an aircraft jet engine, by a cable and counterweight arrangement 3, 4, 13, 14 on a slideway 5 and is connected by a flexible section 7 to a rigid section 8, leading to a further flexible section 9 and to outlet nozzle 10. The assembly is mounted on a wheeled carriage 12 having chock devices 11. The silencer may be located after or surrounded by a conventional muffler.
