Abstract

932,590. Exhaust silencers. EXPANDED METAL CO. Ltd. March 20, 1962 [Dec. 21, 1960], No. 43959/60. Class 7(2). A silencer, e.g., for jet engines, comprises a conical or pyramid shaped baffle 23 on to which is sprayed a film of water by a sprayer 28 at the baffle apex. The casing 12 is of approximately rectangular section and provided with an inlet section 10 adapted to fit over the jet engine outlets 11, the casing shown being of oval section at the entrance 16 to accommodate a pair of engines 11 reducing to circular section at the part 17 which fits within casing 12. Spray rings 40, 41, spray jets of water on to the interior surface of the casings 10, 12, and adjustable baffles 43, Fig. 3, control the flow of air entering around the jet pipes 11. An outlet section 13 is lined with sound absorbing material 31, retained by expanded metal mesh 30, and is provided with vertical baffles 33, Fig. 5, consisting of two layers of expanded metal enclosing a layer of fibre glass. Guide blades 35 are provided at the inlet end of the baffles 33 and an outlet baffle 37 may be pivoted to close the outlet when the silencer, which is mounted on a trolley 15, is not in use. Specification 865,661 is referred to.
