Abstract

1,001,645. Pulse jet engines. SOC. NATIONALE E'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. May 18, 1962 [May 27, 1961], No. 19196/62. Heading F1J. A pulse jet engine has an air pick-up device comprising a conduit open at both ends, acting as a diffuser up-stream of the engine, the outlet 6 being located substantially in the plane of the engine air inlet 2 or preferably, slightly downstream thereof. The effect of the device is to superimpose the expansion wave associated with the shock wave due to combustion on to the shock wave itself. A tube 11 may be placed in front of the engine air inlet and gases escaping therefrom pass through hollow arms 12 to an annular space leading to a nozzle 14. In a modification for operation at supersonic speeds a body is mounted axially of the engine in the intake 4. The body has a conical front portion and a rear portion that may be streamlined or formed by one or many truncated cones. In this embodiment the device has a sharp leading edge (Fig. 3, not shown).
