Abstract
638,563. Sharpening gramophone needles. E. M. G. HAND-MADE GRAMOPHONES, Ltd., and DAVEY, F. G. G. June 23, 1947, No. 16553. [Class 60] In a device for sharpening gramophone needles, such as thorns, and the like in which the rotation of the needle is derived from the rotation of the abrasive wheel by means of a pair of friction wheels, one of the friction wheels is cup-shaped and of rubber or rubber-like material, the curved surface of this wheel, or a part thereof, being arranged to engage the other friction wheel. The device comprises a channelshaped base 10 between the side walls of which is rockably mounted a support 12 carrying a bearing pin on which is removably mounted a unit comprising a screw chuck 14 and a cupshaped friction wheel 15, the central boss 25 of which is a tight fit on the knurled hub portion 26 of the unit. The base carries a second bearing pin 17 on which is mounted a hollow shaft 18 having fixedly mounted thereon a rubber sleeve 19 and an abrasive wheel 20. The chuck 14 is urged towards the abrasive wheel by a spring 21 and the wall of the friction wheel 15 engages the rubber sleeve 19 ; the latter may be rotated by drawing a finger over it, or it may be rotated by the turntable 24, the base 10 of the device being provided on its underside with a cork sheet 11 to rest on the gramophone top.
