The form of my device illustrated in Figs. 6 to 8 of the drawings comprises the supporting base 40 which is adjustably mountad by means of suitable slots 4l and fastening bolts 4,2 on top of the chain housing 43 of the usual slicing machine, adjacent the rotary slicing knife y44 of said machine.
The supporting base is provided with a sleeve 45 in which an oval stem 4G of a bracket 46 is adjustably mounted by means of a set screw 47. Said bracket is provided with an integral bushing 48 in which the vertical shaft 49 is rotatably mounted, the pinion 50 being fastened to the upper end of said shaft and a collar 5l near the lower end, engaging beneath said bushing. fr knuckle 52 is formed at the lower end of said stem and is pivotally connected by means of a knuckle or cl-evis 53 witlrthe shaft 54 carrying a wheel 55 which is adjustably mounted at the lower end of said shaft and is engageable with the convex side of the slicing knife 44 and driven by the rotation of said knife, said knuckle conneet-ion providing a universal joint between said shafts 49 and 54.
A bushing 56 is formed at the upper end of an arm 5Textending upward from the end of bracket 46', and a bushing 5S is formed at the upper end of an arm 59 which extends upward fronrsaid bracket. A shaft 60 is rotatably mounted in said bushings 56 und 58 and has a pinion (il fastened to it, which is driven by pinion 50. A sharpening wheel 62 is fastened to the outer end of shaft 60 by means of a pair of washers and a set screw 63 engaging in the end of said shaft.
Means is provided for moving the wheel 55 into engagement with the convex side of the slicing knife, said means comprising a lever 65'fulcru1ned on a bracket arm GG es:- tending downward at a slant from the bracket 46. A collar 6T surrounds shaft 54 and contains Va threaded linger 68 which ei;- tends'loosely through the slot (S9 in lever (55 and is retained on said lever by a suitable Washer and nut. A stop lug 7() is provided on stem 4G for linnting the release n'iovements of said lever, and a spring il is connected with said lever and the bracket 46" for normally retaining said lever against said lug, in release position.
In using this form of my invention the device is adjusted in the proper position in contact with the knife, by means of slots 4l and bolts 42 on the base 40, and the lever 65 is moved from the position shown in full lines in Fig. (3, to the position shown in dotted lines. in said ligure, thereby engaging the wheel 55 with the knife, as best shown in Fig. 7, and rotating shafts 54 and 49, pinions 50 and 6l, and sharpener '62. In the mean time the slicing knife 44 is driven by the operation of the machine in the usual manner. The wheel 55 is vertically adjustable on shaft 54, to place it at a greater or smaller radius on the slicing knife and allow for adjusting the speed of the Sharpener. Said Sharpener may thus be adjusted to be driven at the same peripheral speed as the knife, or at a different speed.
Ilt has been found in practice that very desirable results are obtained with either form of my sharpener while traveling at the une linear speed as the slicing knife at the point of contact, these Sharpeners being very effective in view of the fact that they rotate in a different direction than does the slicing knife at their point of contact.
The sharpener is also arranged to sharpen other articles, such butcher knives, clevers, etc. For this purpose the wheel 24 of the form of my invention shown in Figs. l to 5 is moved into engagement with the slicing knife, as shown in full line positions of said wheel Q4 and lever 19 in Fig. 3, while the sharpencr with its lever 35 are moved away from the knife, substantially in the dotted line position in said Fig. 3, the article which is to be sharpened being conveniently held against the sharpener and the machine operated in the usual manner. In the form shown in Figs. 6 to 8 the sharpening wheel may be similarly moved away from the knife by loosening bolts 42, while thewheel 45 is retained in contact with the knife.
What l claim as new and desire to ser-nre by Letters Patent is: V

A. device for sharpening the bevel edge of a circular rotary knife of a slicing machine1 comprising in combination, a rotary knife sharpening member, means driven by the engagement with the side of a knife, operative connections between said knife driven means and said sharpener, and handle means for readily swinging said sharpening member into and out of engagement with said knife.
2. A device for sharpening the bevel edge of a circular rotary knife of a slit-,ing machine, comprising in crmibination, a rotary knife sharpeningA member. means for permanently mounting said member on said machine and for conveniently moving said member toward and from said knife, means driven by engagement with the knife, transmission mechanism between said knife driven means and said sharpening men'il'ier, and eccentric means for inoving said knife driven means into and out of contact with said knife.

4. A device for sharpening the rotary circular knife of a slicing machiiie, comprising in combination, a rotary grinder, a frictional wheel driven by the rotary knife, means for rotating said grinder with said wheel, means for moving said grinder into and out of contact with said knife, and a handle with eccentric means for moving said grinder and said wheel together into and out of contact with said knife.
5. A device for sharpening the rotary circular knife of a slicing machine, comprising in combination, a Sharpener, means driven by engagement with side of said knife, driving connections between said knife driven means and said Sharpener, and means including a screw and a stem supported thereon for adjusting said Sharpener radially with respect to the edge of said knife.
6. A device for .sharpening the rotary circular knife of a slicing machine, comprising in con'ibination, a Sharpener, means driven by engagen'ient with the side of said knife, driving connections between said knife driven means and said` Sharpener, and
means for adjusting said knife driven means radially with respect to said knife to vary the speed ratio between said knife and said Sharpener.
7. A device' for sharpening the rotary cir-l cular knife of a slicing machine, comprising in combination, a knife sharpening member,
a bracket for supporting said Sharpening member, means engageable withjthe knife for driving said Sharpener, and means for adjusting said knife driven means and said sharpener with respect to each other.
8. A device for sharpening the rotary knife of a slicing machinefcomprising in combination, a bracket-l aoljustably mounted on said machine, a shaft rotatably mounted :in said brackets a Sharpener fastened on said shaft, a. second shaft rotatably and eccentrically mounted in said bracket, gears connecting said shafts, a rotatable member fas-v tened on said second shaft, means for adjusting said Shaft and member radially on said knife to vary the speed ratio of said member and knife, and means to move said rotatable member into engagement with said knife to drive said shafts and Sharpener.
9. In a slicing machine having a convex circular knife, in combination, a shaft, means on said machine for supporting said shaft parallel with the plane of said knife, a. rotary Sharpener `fixed on said shaft, a Wheel driven by engagement with the convex side of said knife, mechanism for rotating Said shaft by` means of said driven wheel, and swingable means for readily vmoving said sharpeiier and said from said knife.

In a slicing machine having a rotatable knife, a supportingbase with avsleeve adjustably mounted on said machine, a bracket having a stem with which it is adjustably mounted in said sleeve, a shaft mounted in said bracket, a sharpener'mounted on said bracket, driving connections between Said shaft and said Sharpener, a knife driven wheel, SwingablyI connected with the parallel with` the plane of said actuating said wheel together awayV lower-end of said shaft, and means for swinging said driven wheel intoengagement with said rotatable knife.

In a slicing machine having a rotatable knife, and a chain housing with a rotatable shaft for supporting said knife, a supporting base with a sleeve adjustably mounted on said housing, a bracket having a stem with which it is adjustablymounted in said sleeve, a vertical shaft mounted in said bracket, a swingable shaft having universal joint connected with said vertical shaft, a knife driven wheel a-djustably mounted on said swingable shaft, and means for swinging said wheel into action with said knife.

A device for sharpening the bevel edge of a circular rotary knife of a slicing machine, comprising in combination, a sharpener, a wheel driven by engagement with the side face of the knife, driving connections between said' knife driven Wheel and said sharpenenand meansincluding an adjustable member with a shaft carried thereby and means to fasten said wheel on said shaft, for adjusting said wheel radially 011 said knife to vary the speed of the Sharpener with respect to said knife.
