To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l, Pln'rnu C. on Gnoo'r, a subject of the ruler of the Netherlands, residing at Rotterdam, in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpening Devices for Slicing-Machine Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sharpening device for slicing machine knives preferably pf the rotary circular type, and one of the objects of the same is to provide an improved device of this type by means of which the knife may be readily and eiiiciently sharpened, and which device when not in use may be moved into a position out of the way.
A further object is to provide an improved device of this character, embodying a sharpening device for the face of the knife, having means whereby the device may be always maintained in a substantially parallel position with respect to the face of the knife. To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty, insubstantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, hereinafter more fully described, and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings exemplifying the invention, and in which:

ings and in the present exempli'fication of this invention, the numeral 15 designates a rotary cutter j ournaled in the usual support 16 and being provided with a substantially flat and a bevel face as is customary with cutters of this character. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 7, there is provided an upright designated generally by the reference numeral 17, which is removably secured to the support 16 in any suitable manner preferably by having one of its extremities 18 threaded into the slide 19, the latter being adjustably secured to move the support toward and away from the lateral face of the cutter by suitable fastening devices 20.
Surrounding the upright 17 adjacent its lower end is an elastic member 21, preferably in the form of a coil spring which is housed within a sleeve 22, the end 23 of the sleeve being provided with a threaded aperture, adjacent the element 19, and in which aperture the extremity 18 of the upright 17 is threaded. The sleeve may be of any desired length, but terminates preferably adjacent the longitudinal center of the upright, and a sleeve 24 loosely contacts the upper portion of the upright and is provided with a closed extremity having an aperture therethrough and through which .aperture the reduced extremity 25 of the upright 17 loosely passes. This sleeve 24 is connected with the upright 17 preferably by means of a pin or bolt, which passes through the sleeve, with its extremity entering a spirally arranged groove 27 in the upright,
and which extends lengthwise of the upright, so that when the sleeve 24: is moved longitudinally of the upright, it will also be given a rotary or pivotal movement about the upright The sleeve 24 is of a length, that the extremity of the elastic member 21 will engage against the lower extremity thereof and a cam device 28, is pivotally connected as at 29, with the extremity of the reduced portion 25 of the upright. This cam device is provided with a handle 30 by means of which it maybe swung about its pivot tocause the cam device to engage a plate or cap 31to depress the sleeve 24 against-the stress of the elastic member 21, or to be moved about its pivot in the opposite direction to permit the stress of the elastic member to raise the sleeve 2%. Anti-friction devices. 32 may be provided between nut 34 in position. Obviously by adjusting these nuts 34, 35, the extent of the reciproeating movement of the sleeve 24 may be varied. A housing 36 may also be provided, if desired, for the nuts 34, 35, and the pin 26, and which housing may be removably secured to the sleeve by one or more fastening devices 37.
A collar 38 is supported by the sleeve 24 to move therewith and this collar is provided with arms or brackets 39, 40, (see particularly Figs. 6 and 7). A bearing 41 is provided in the arm or bracket 3 and in which bearing a spindle 42 is journaled, the bearing having connected therewith a grinding or sharpening device 46 adapted to act on the bevel face 47 of the cutter 15. An elastic member 48 is housed Within the bearing with one extremity engaging a support 49, and the other extremity engages a collar or shoulder 50 connected with the spindle. A handle 51 is provided which contacts with the shoulder 49 and is adapted to move the spindle longitudinally in the bearing against the stress of the elastic member and thereby regulate or control the degree of pressure against the cutter.
A grinder 52 provided with a substantially flat face 53 is provided for the other side of the cutter, and is connected with a spindle 54 mounted in a bearing 55 and which bearing is pivotally connected as at 56 with the arm or bracket 40. An elastic member 57 is housed within the bearing 55 and'abuts a shoulder 58, through which the spindle slides, and this shoulder 58 abuts a stop 59 fixed with respect to the bearing. The other end of the elastic member abuts a shoulder or collar 60 which is connected with the spindle 54. The grinder 52 in its operating position is arranged on the side of the knife opposite to the side on which the grinder 45 is arranged, and in order to permit the grinder 45 to operate and to render the inder 52 inactive, a handle 61 is provided which has a portion adapted ta contact with the shoulder 60, so that when pressure is exerted upon the handle, the spindle 54 will be-moved longitudinally in its bearing against the stress of the elastic member, to move and hold the grinder 52 into the dotted line position in Fig. 5, and out of contact with the face of the knife. Obviously when the handle 61 is released, the elastic member will move the grinder measva 52 into contact with the face of the knife as shown in the full line position in Fig. 5.
By the provision of the pivot 56, the
bearing 55 will move about a substantially upright pivot, and this pivotal movement will permit the face of the grinder 52 to be automatically maintained in a substantially parallel position with respect to the face of the knife. The pivotal movement of the bearing may be limited by means of. suitable stops 62, 63 (see Fig. 7), and guards 64 may be provided if desired for the grinders.
The operation of this improved construction briefly stated is as follows: Assuming the parts to be in operating position as shown in Fig. 1, that is with one of the grinders on each side of the knife, and in contact with the respective faces thereof. The grinding operation will be effected by the rotation of the grinders, and which mo tion will be imparted thereto by the rotation of the knife. If it is desired to grind the bevel face and not the other face of the knife, all that is necessary is to press upon the handle 61 of the grinder 52 to hold this grinder out of contact with its face of the knife, until it is desired to bring it into operation. To accomplish this the handle 61 is-simply released. After the grinding has been completed all that is necessary is to swing the cam device 28 about its pivot and from the position shown in Fig. 1.
.This will release the position of the support which carries the grinders, and permit it to be moved by the stress of the elastic member 21 upon the upright 17, to raise the grinders. During this raising movement, the pin and spiral grooves 26, 27 will impart a pivotal or rotary movement to the sleeve 24, and also the grinders, to move them away from the cutter, by shifting one of the grinders across the edge of the knife into the position shown in Fig. 6, or until both of the grinders are on one side of the knife. From this position, and when it is again desired to sharpen the knife, all that necessary is to depress or swing the cam" device 28 in opposite direction about its pivot 29. This willdepress the sleeve 24 against the stress of the elastic member 21, and as the sleeve is descending upon the upright 17 it will be given a rotary or pivotal movement to swing one of the grinders across the edge of the knife, and both grinders in operating position, or until they contact with the respective faces of the knife, it being understood that the downward movement of the sleeve 24 is limited in this form of the invention, by the engagement of the nut 34 with the end of the sleeve 22.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 8 to 10, the sleeve 65 which corresponds with the sleeve 24 is of a length to extend for some distance along the upright 17 and is provided with a housing 66 in :which a portion of the elastic member 21 extends,. so that one extremity thereof abuts a shoulder 67 in the housing, while the other extremity of the elastic member abuts a nut or collar 68 mounted upon the threaded extremity 18 of the upright. The lower extremity of the sleeve 65 is provided with ex ternal threads 69 to receive the nut 70, which latter is adapted to abut the nut 68 to limit the downward movement of the sleeve 65, and a jam nut 71 may be provided for holding the nut 70 in its adjusted position with respect-to the sleeve 65. Obviously the degree of movement of the sleeve 65 may be varied by adjusting either the nut 60 or 7 0,

While in the present exemplification of this invention, the preferred forms and constructions have been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made, in the details of constructions, and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of this invention, and it is therefore to, be understood that the drawings are to be considered as being merely diagrammatic.
What is claimed as newis 1. A sharpening device of the character described, embodyinga sharpener for acting on each face of the knife, a freely shiftable support carrying both sharpeners, said, sharpeners being fixed with respect to each other, and provisions for shifting the support to simultaneously move the sharpeners into active positions with relation to the respective faces of the knife.
2. A sharpening device of the character described, embodying a sharpener for acting on each face of the knife, a support carrying both sharpeners, said sharpeners being fixed with respect to each other, provisions for imparting a compound movement to the support to simultaneously move the sharp eners into active positions with relation to the respective faces of the knife, and provisions for moving the sharpeners in directions toward each other. v
3. A sharpening device of the character described, embodying a sharpener for the front of the knife, a sharpener for the back of the knife, a support for both sharpeners, said sharpeners being fixed with respect to each other, means for shifting the support 'tions with respect to'the knife,
to move the sharpeners into and out of active position with relation to the respective faces of the knife, and means for imparting another and different movement to the support during a portion of the said shifting movement.
4:. A sharpening device of the character described,'embodying a sharpener for the front of the knife, a sharpener for the back of the knife, a support for both sharpeners,
said sharpeners being fixed with respect to each-other, means for shifting the support .to move the sharpeners into and out of active position with relation to the respective faces of the knife, and means for automatically imparting another and difierent move ment to the support during-a portion of the said shifting movement of the support, to move one of the sharpeners over the edge of the knife.

A sharpening device of thecharacter described, embodying a sharpener for the front of the knife, a sharpener for the back of the knife, a support carrying both the sharpeners, provisions for imparting a compound movement to the support to simultaneously-.move the sharpeners into active positions with relation to the respective faces of the knife, and means for acting on each of the sharpeners for yieldingly holding them in engagement with the faces of the knife.-

A sharpening device of the character described, embodying a shiftable support, a sharpener for the face of the knife, a sharpener for'the back of theknife, said sharpeners carried by the support and fixed with relation to each other, provisions for shifting the support to simultaneously move the sharpeners into and out of active posiand provisions operating automatically to cause both sharpeners to assume a position on one side of the knife.

A sharpening device of the character described, embodying a shiftable support, a sharpener for the face of the knife, a sharpener for the back of the knife, said sharpeners carried by thesupport and fixed with relation to each other, provisions for shifting the support to simultaneously move the sharpeners into and out of active positions with respect to the knife, and provisions whereby another and different movement will be imparted to the support during a portion of its shifting movement for caus- 'ng bothv sharpeners to assume a position on the same side of the knife.
8. 1L sharpening device of the character described, embodying a shiftable support, a sharpener for the face of the knife, a sharpener for the back of the knife, said sharpeners carried by the support and fixed with sharpeners into and out of active positions with respect to the knife, and provisions for imparting another and swinging movement to the support during its shifting movement.

A sharpening device of the character described, embodying a sharpener for the front of the knife, a sharpener for the back of the knife, and a pivoted support carrying both sharpeners, said sharpeners being fixed with respect to each other, and adapted to I be simultaneously brought into operative relation with the respective faces of the knife by the pivoted movement of the support.

A sharpening device of the character' described, embodying a sharpener for the front of the knife, a sharpener for the back of the knife, and a support having a compound movement andcarrying both sharpeners, said sharpeners being fixed with relation to each other and adapted to be brought into operative positions with relation to the respective facesof the knife, by the compound movement of the support, said sharpeners maintaining their fixed relation during the movement of the support.

A. sharpening device of the character described, embodying a sharpener for the front of the knife, a sharpener for the back of the knife, a freely movable support carrying both of the sharpeners, provislons whereby a movement of the support will I cause the sharpeners to be simultaneously brought into engagement with the respective faces of the knife, and provisions whereby one of the sharpeners may be maintained sharpener in one direction.

17. A sharpening device of the character described, embodying a sharpener for the front of the knife, a sharpener for the back of the knife, means supporting the sharpeners, and means connecting one of the sharpeners with its support for movement about an upright pivot.

A sharpening device of the character described, embodying a sharpener for the front of the knife, a sharpener for the back of the knife, means supporting the sharpeners, provisions for automatically maintaining the active face of one sharpener, substantially parallel with the respective face of the knife, andyielding' means acting upon each sharpener for yieldingly holding the sharpeners in engagement 'with the respective faces of the knife.

A sharpening device ofthe character described, embodying a sharpener for the front of the knife, a sharpener for the back of the knife, means supporting the sharpeners, provisions freely pivoting one of the sharpeners for automatically maintaining the active face. of such sharpener in substantially parallel position with relation to'the respective face of the knife, and means for limiting such pivotal -movement. of the 20. sharpening device of the character described, embodying a sharpener for the front, of the knife, a sharpener for theiback of the knife, means supporting the sharp eners, provisions freely pivoting one of the sharpeners for automatically maintaining the active face of such sharpener in substantially parallel position with relation to the respective face of the knife, and spaced the sharpener.

A. sharpening device of the character described, embodying a sharpener for the front of the knife, a sharpener for the back of the knife, said sharpeners being fixed with relation to each other, and provisions controlling both of the sharpeners whereby simultaneously moved into and out of engagement with the respective faces of the knife and while the sharpeners are maintained in their fixed relation.
