Abstract

1,069,311. Polishing. BUEHLER Ltd. Jan. 28, 1965 [May 25, 1964], No. 3899/65. Heading B3D. A method of polishing a spot on a metallic body comprises subjecting the spot to orbital movement of, and frictional engagement with, a flexible resilient polishing head rotatable about an axis inclined to a normal to the surface of the spot. The polishing head 27 is resiliently mounted on the spindle 24 of an electric motor 19 supported at a small angle from a normal to the surface having the spot to be polished in a housing 12 rotatably mounted about an axis normal to the surface in bearings 13, 16 in an outer housing 10 carried by a bracket 50 on a post 51 upstanding from a base 52 which can be placed on the surface. The motor 19 has an upper spindle 39 connected by reduction gearing 40... 45 to a spindle 46 having a wheel 38 in frictional engagement with the inner surface of a dome 34 on the outer housing. The motor is connected by a pair of brushes 35, 36 to a pair of slip rings 31, 32 in turn connected by a switch 30 and cable 29 to a source of power. The polishing head is of flexible resilient material having abrasive paper or other polishing material adhesively secured thereto. In operation, the apparatus is placed with the polishing head over the spot to be polished, which spot is, for example, to be examined under a reflected light microscope, and the motor 19 is switched on to rotate the spindle 24 carrying the polishing head 27 and also the spindle 39 driving the friction wheel 38 to rotate the inner housing 12 carrying the motor so that as the polishing head rotates it also moves in a circular orbit to polish the spot. In another embodiment, the outer housing 10 is suspended above the spot to be polished on three vertically adjustable legs.
