Abstract

1407192 Grinding and polishing WAGGONFABRIK UERDINGEN AG 4 April 1974 [5 April 1973] 15096/74 Heading B3D Apparatus for grinding or other surface treatment of a plane or slightly curved surface comprises a rotatably drivable member 2 which carries for rotation therewith at least two discshaped carriers 3 adaptive to carry abrasive or other surface treatment substance 9, the axes of the carriers being offset from the axis of the member 2 and each carrier being connected to the member so that it is freely rotatable about its own axis and so that it is pivotable in all directions about a point lying on its own axis whereby the carriers are capable of aligning against both planar and slightly curved surfaces. In one embodiment, the drivable member 2 is in the form of a disc having a plurality of carriers 3 each mounted on a pin 12 which is adjustably screwed into the disc and secured in position by a lock nut 13. The pin has a swivel head ball 11 which is received in a conicallyshaped recess 10 in a bearing member 8 of the carrier and retained therein by a plate 5. The bearing member is disposed within a flexible annular ring 7 which is thicker than the bearing member and on surface has a plate 6 carrying the abrasive 9. In use, the disc 2 is rotated and the carriers rotate in response to the frictional engagement of the abrasive with the surface to be treated, the swivel balls permitting the carriers to conform to the surface. In a hand guided embodiment, the disc is rotated by a belt-drive from the angle drive of an electric motor, and water can be supplied to the surface being ground through a bore in the side of the disc. In another embodiment, the drivable member is in the form of four arms arranged in a cross, each arm having a carrier at its end and being flexible. In a further embodiment, the drivable member 2, Fig. 7, is rotatable by a drive and suspended by a rod 20 from a carriage 21 movable by a device 24 along guide rails 23 of a trolley 22, the suspension being such that, in use, the carriers 3 are pivotably urged against a vertical surface to be located, such as the side wall of a railway vehicle.
