1324350 Dressing grinding wheels TOYODA KOKI KK 25 Jan 1972 [8 Feb 1971] 3492/72 Heading B3D Apparatus for dressing a grinding wheel 13 having first and second tapered outer peripheral surfaces 13a, 13b intersecting with each other at a predetermined angle and a re-entrant curved surface 13c on the outer edge of the second surface, comprises a first dressing wheel 42 having an annular working surface for dressing the first tapered outer peripheral surface 13a, and a second dressing wheel 57 having a cylindrical surface 57a for dressing the second tapered outer pheripheral surface 13b and an outer edge 57b for dressing the re-entrant curved surface 13c. The grinding wheel is used for grinding the tapered surfaces 2, 3 of a ball race and rounding the outer edge of the surface 2 to a curve 4 so as to prevent damage by that edge to either races moved along a conveyer during finishing. The grinding wheel is mounted on a carriage 11 movable about a pivot 12 on a base 10, and a plate 15 is adjustable about a pivot 14 on the carriage. The plate is formed with a slide 21 along which a feed carriage 25 is adjustable by a screw 27 and handwheel 28 or automatic feed means 26. A slide 23 is movable along a guideway 29 on the carriage 25 by means of a piston-and-cylinder device 24 the slide having a ledge 34 on which is adjustable ably mounted a L-shape plate 35 which, in turn supports a dressing head 45 for adjustment about a pivot 39. The dressing head consists of a motor 44 driving the first dressing wheel 42 which has an annular dressing surface 42a formed of diamond or other abrasive particles. A supporting plate 46 is formed on, and perpendicular to, the lower part of the slide 23 and adjustably carries a L-shaped plate 47 which, in turn, carries a second dressing head 60 for adjustment about a pivot 54. The second dressing head consists of a motor 59 driving the second dressing wheel 57, having a cylindrical dressing surface 57a and an edge dressing surface 57b. In operation, the dressing head 45 is adjusted so that its axis a is parallel to an axis X-X passing through the centre of the grinding wheel, and the dressing head 60 is adjusted so that its axis b is at a predetermined angle to the axis of the grinding wheel. When the device 24 is actuated to move the slide 23, the lower portion of the first dressing wheel dresses the surface 13a of the grinding wheel, and the cylindrical surface 57a and edge 57b dress the surface 13b and re-entrant arm 13c of the wheel. The first dressing head may be adjusted so that the surface 13a is straight or convexly or concavely curved.
