Abstract
194,592. Partridge, W. W. May 15, 1922. Needles and the like, pointing.-A device for sharpening gramophone needles &c. comprises an abrading-wheel A journaled in a frame D and adapted to be driven by frictional contact with the rotating table of a gramophone, or other rotating body, or by other means. The needle &c. J to be sharpened is held in a spindle G running in a double bearing F which is pivoted to an arm E. The spindle G carries a wheel H, which is adapted to contact with the abrading- wheel A and to be driven thereby, the wheel H being of such size that, when it and the needle both rest on the same surface of the wheel A, the needle point will be ground at the correct angle. The arm E is pivoted at L on a piece M, which is adjustably secured to the frame by a screwed pin N, and the wheel H and the needle are held down on the abrading-wheel by a spring K. In the abrading-wheel is a central recess, in which is a pin O; by depressing the outer end of the arm E, the wheel H moves into the recess, lifting the needles and engaging the pin O, thereby causing the abrading-wheel to act as a brake to the rotating part which drives the wheel. The frame D is mounted to swivel about a pin R on a base P, which is secured to the base of the gramophone or other surface, whereby the abrading-wheel may be held in, or out of, contact with the rotating driving-member by means of a spring i secured at one end to the base P and at the other end to a pin T. This pin is carried by a lever S, secured to the pin R, and projects through a curved slot in the base P and into contact with the frame D; the frame may be removed from the base by removal of a nut U, and a brake lever Z, Fig. 5, may be substituted therefor to be used with the gramophone.
