and Improved Sharpener for Phonograph-' Needles, of which the following is a full, clear,. and exact description.
The invention relates to grinding devices and its object is to provide a new and 1m proved sharpener for phonograph needles or points and arranged to enable the userto quickly and accurately re-sharpen a used needle or stylus. Another object 1s t0 provide a sharpener which can be readily held in the hand and requires no other support. Another object is to provide a sharpener which is simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufacture and not liable to get easily out of order.
With these and other objects in vlew, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanyingdrawings forming a part of this specification, 1n which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the yiews.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improved sharpener with parts shown in elevation;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the same; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan new of the needle holder and swing arm.
The forward end of a handle 10 is provided with a ferrule 11 against which is clamped one face of a grinding member 12 held on a screw rod 13 screwed in the forward end of the handle 10. A nut 14 screws on the screw rod 13 to securely clamp the grinding member 12 in place against the ferrule 11. The grinding member 12 may be in the form ofa wheel or axially perforated or bored disk or circular member of any suitable abrading or grinding material having a peripheral grinding surface or edge, that is, natural or artificial, or abrasive paper or cloth, or a rim of abrasive material on a wheel body of non-abrasive material. On the outer end of the screw rod 13, that is, between the nut 14 and the head 15 of the screw rod 13, is mounted to swmg an angular arm 20 provided at its outer end with a pivot 21 extending at a right angle to the axis of the screw rod 13, and on this pivot 21 is mounted to swing a bearing 22 in which is mounted to turn the stem 23 of a socket 24 adapted to hold a needle 25 to be sharpened. The needle 25 is fastened in place by a set screw 26 screwing in the socket 24. On the outer end of the socket stem 23 is held a wing nut 30 which forms a handle for turning the socket stem in the bearing 22, for imparting a swinging motion to the bearing 22 on the arm 20 and for swinging the arm 20 and the parts carried thereby bodily around.
It is understood that the arm 20, the hearing 22 and the socket 24 form a needleholding means for holding the point of the needle 25 in angular, that is, in grinding relation with the peripheral face of the grinding wheel 12. When using the sharpener, the operator fastens a needle 25 in the socket 24 by the set screw 26 and then the operator with one hand takes hold of the handle 10 and with the other hand takes hold of the wing nut 30.
In order to sharpen the point of the needle on the peripheral face of the grinding member 12, the operator can proceed. in any of the three following ways, namely, holding the handle 10 and grinding wheel stationary and swinging the needle-holding means around with the point of the needle in grinding engagement with the peripheral surface of the grinding member 12, or holding the needle-holding means stationary and turning the handle 10 and grinding wheel 12 around with the needle point in contact with the grinding member, or, thirdly, turning simultaneously both the needle-holding means and the handle with its grinding wheel one relative to the other with the needle point in contact with the peripheral face of the grinding member.
It is understood. that in each case the operator can press the needle point in con- 7 tact with the peripheral face of the grind ing member with more or less force owing to the pivotal connection of the bearing 22 with the arm 20. It will also be noticed that the point is uniformly ground. owing to the turning of the socket stem 23 in the bearing 22. Although the grinding member 12 lasts a long time it can be readily removed and replaced by another whenever it is desired to do so.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A sharpener for phonograph needles, comprising a handle, a screw rod detachably secured to the forward end of the said handle, a grinding wheel. rcmovably held on the said screw rod, a nut screwing on the said screw rod adjacent the said grinding wheel, an angular arm mounted to Swing on the said rod between the said nut and the head of the screw rod, a bearing pivoted on the outerend of the said arm, a socket adapted to hold a needle and mounted to turn in the said bearing, and a handle on the said socket to turn the latter in the bearing and to swing the needleholding socket, bearing and arm bodily around on the screw rod.

A sharpener for phonograph needles, comprising a straight gripping handle having a socket in one end, a rod extending from the socket in the forward end of t 1e handle and secured against displacement, a grinding wheel attached to said rod, means on the rod to retain the wheel against displacement, said wheel being in the form of aflat disk engaged by one end of the handle and Said retaining means so that the rod will project therefrom, an arm having a sleeve mounted on the rod, said rod having means to prevent displacement of the sleeve and permit turningthereof on the rod, a needle holder pivoted on said arm near its free end adjacentto and above the upper end of the rod, said needle holder having a socket adapted to hold the needle with the point thereof in grinding relation with the peripheral face of the grinding wheel when swung downwardly and adapted to be turned independently of the holder and means for manipulating said socket to swing the same horizontally or to turn the same independently of the movement of the holder bodily around the wheel.

A sharpener for phonograph needles, comprising a straight round handle, a rod extending from the forward end of the handle and detachably secured thereto, a grinding wheel attached to the said rod, an arm mounted to swing on the said rod, a bearing pivoted on the said arm, and a socket adapted to hold a needle and mounted to turn in the said bear-i11 the socket being provided with a handle to permit of turning the socket in the bearing and to swing the latter and the arm around on the rod, or to turn the handle, the grinding wheel and rod while holding the arm, the bearing and the socket stationary, or to turn both the grinding wheel and the needleholding means around simultaneously.
