Abstract

636,398. Bearings. AUGEREAU, G. G. E. Jan. 21, 1947, No. 1926. Convention date, Feb. 23, 1946. [Class 12 (i)] The bearing surfaces of a journal bearing are surrounded by an oil chamber sealed to prevent loss of liquid and initially filled to a level above the topmost point of the journal. Fig. 1 shows a shaft 1, having a reduced bearing portion 2 which rotates in a split bearing block 5, 6 fitted with bearing liners 7, and terminates in a collar 4. Sealing rings 8, 11 are secured against the sides of the bearing block 5, 6 by end cover rings 10, 13 screwed on to the bearing block. The sealing rings have cup portions at one end which are held against the shaft 1 and collar 4 by flexible tension rings 9, 12 respectively. Lubricant is introduced into the enclosed bearing space through a filling hole 14 fitted with an air-tight plug. Figs. 3, 4 show a locomotive coupling rod end 23 provided with longitudinal bores 24 which act as lubricant reservoirs and communicate with the space enclosed by sealing rings 25. Filling openings 26 are fitted with stoppers 27. End cover rings 28, 29 may be secured on the rod end by means of a bayonet attachment with or without locking means, by bolts 30, or by other means. Fig. 6 shows a combined locomotive main rod big-end and a coupling rod end mounted on the same journal 22, the arrangement for each rod end being similar to that described for the single coupling rod end except that the two contiguous packings 2 rub upon a floating ring 31 which extends into annular side channels in the adjacent faces of the two rod ends. Specification 635,828, [Group XXVI], is referred to.
