Abstract

1310274 Silicon nitride bearings NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 1 Sept 1971 [2 Sept 1970 30 April 1971] 42081/70 and 12392/71 Heading F2A A bearing for a shaft 1 has a bearing surface formed of silicon nitride, and consists of a sleeve 2 of silicon nitride material which surrounds the shaft and which is divided into a plurality of segments, the segments being disposed in a housing 3 against which they are held by circlips 5 provided in the inner surface of the sleeve. The housing is closed by an end cap 6. Gas is fed under pressure into the bearing via passages 7 in the shaft. In a modification there may be provided at each end of the sleeve annular ceramic end seals which may be in the form of segments held in place by lugs in the shaft. The bearing surface may be shaped so as to facilitate generation of an hydrodynamic gas film, or fluid passages may be formed in the shaft or housing in order to provide pressurized bearing fluid.
