Abstract

634,323. Piston packing. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. May 19, 1947, No. 13457. Convention date, June 21, 1946. [Class 122(i)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A pump piston comprises a sleeve 102 fitted with a thimble 114 pressed against a spring ring 118 by a spring 116 which also bears against a sleeve 120 pinned to the sleeve 104 and a connecting rod 122 having an enlarged end within a recess in a shoe 124 engaging an eccentric 88; the curved end of the sleeve 102 engages a complementary surface on the shoe 124. During the suction-stroke of the pump the spring 116 moves the thimble 114 upwards against the ring 118 and sealing liquid is drawn in through a passage 100 in the eccentric and the shoe 124 and during the delivery stroke, the pressure of the liquid being pumped acts on the thimble 114 and forces the sealing-liquid through ports 108 to the groove 106 to seal the space between the sleeve 102 and the cylinder. In a modification as shown in Fig. 4, the sleeve 102 is replaced by thimble 102A within which is fitted a sleeve 110A connected to a pin 123 of the connecting rod 122, the pin 123 engaging slots 125 in the thimble 102A to permit relative movement of the thimble and sleeve which are pressed apart by a spring 116A. The pistons form part of a multi-cylinder pump for delivery of volatile fuels (see Group XXVIII).
