Abstract

633,433. Wave-guides. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., HICKIN, E. M., and TEW, J. R. April 10, 1947, No. 9633. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A coupling for two wave-guides comprises a body provided with a hole fitting closely round the ends of the guides which slide in, one from each end, and constrains the wave-guide ends into accurate alignment with each other or with a part of the body adapted to connect them electrically, and means for rigidly clamping the wave-guides to the body. As shown, two rectangular wave-guides, 1, 1<1> slide in a rectangular hole in a metal sleeve 2 screw-threaded on its outer surface. A metal collar 4 is secured to each wave-guide, and carries a rubber washer 5 round a shoulder on its inner face. Flanged sleeve nuts 6, 6<1> bear on the collars 4 through split washers 7 to press the wave-guide ends into abutment. Locking- nuts 8, 8<1> are provided on the sleeve 2. The collars 4 may be so positioned that the waveguide ends do not quite abut and an annular groove of depth equal to a half-wavelength on the inside of the sleeve provides an electrical connection between the guides. In a further modification, part of the hole in the sleeve is of reduced dimensions so as to form a short length of wave-guide against which the ends of the guide abut. The parts of the coupling, except the surface of the annular groove or of the smaller part of the hole may be of plastic material.
