Abstract
597,240. Wave-guides. WARREN, J. B., and ALLEN, W. D. April 19, 1945, No. 9848. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] A wave-guide connecting piece comprises a portion of rectangular-section guide which feeds at right angles into a portion of circularsection guide so that H 10 wave in the former is transformed into E01 wave in the latter, and the circular portion in turn feeds at right angles into a second portion of rectangular guide so that the E01 wave in the circular portion is transformed back into H10 wave in the second rectangular portion. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, a rectangular guide 1 is connected through a circular guide 2', 2<11>, to a second rectangular guide 3. The transmitted wave has an H10 form in the rectangular guides and an E01 form in the circular guides. Relative rotation of the guides is permitted by making the circular guide in two sections 2<1>, 2<11> coupled by quarter-wave flanges 4<1>. Matching is produced by tapering the non-resonant dimension of the rectangular guides as at 7 and matching pistons 5 are also provided. Each section of the circular guide includes a filter 6 in the form of a metal ring on a dielectric disc as described in Specification 597,216 for removing unwanted modes in the circular guide. Alternatively, the circular guide may be in one piece having a flanged end for rotation relative to one of the rectangular guides, Fig. 5 (not shown). The circular guide may be bent and may be in more than two pieces, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). Fig. 8 shows two units similar to Fig. 4 connected in series, the common rectangular guide 3, 31 being formed with a twist.
