Abstract

632,052. Two-part couplings. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd., DIXON, H. J., GAUTERIN, A. G., and SOMERFORD, H. W. Jan. 21, 1948, No. 1879. [Class 38 (i)] Multicore cables, especially communication cables, are joined in electrical symmetry by two similar connectors each comprising an end part 1 receiving the cable end 3 and from which project axially hollow trough-shaped sections 21 ... 26 in which are mounted contacts arranged to correspond to the core dispositions in the cables and supported so that the two connectors can be brought together by a movement transverse to the cable-axis. The end part 1 screws on to an end piece 12 which is provided with a vertical slot 13 which receives a projection 14 on a second end-piece 18 through which are passed tie rods 10 to secure the sections between the end-pieces. The projection 14 has a socket 20 for a pin 15 in the slot 13. A ring 16 carried on the end-piece 12 is apertured at 17 in line with the slot 13 and is tapered so that on turning the ring after the two connectors are brought together they are looked. Each connector and its contacts are held in a jig and the hollows 8 in the sections are filled with compound which also secures the contacts. A tapering moulded body 5 encloses the end part 1 and the cable end 3 to prevent sharp bends.
