Abstract

629,666. Ladders. MERRYWEATHER & SONS, Ltd., STUBINGTON, R. E., and MILLER, L. C. Nov. 29, 1946, No. 35437, [Class 20 (ii) ] A light metal ladder, e.g. an extensible ladder, has each side member formed of upper and lower rails D, A secured together by spaced parallel metal plates C arranged in pairs at intervals along the ladder side for the reception of the ends of the ladder rungs E in opposed holes in the plates C; the inner holes being larger than the outer holes and the ends of the rungs being expanded into the holes and thus tapered. As shown each side of a top ladder section of an extensible ladder has a J-shaped bottom rail providing. a channel which slidably engages on a guide B secured to the bottom ladder section. The tubular rungs E are corrugated externally to form splines and the ends of the rungs besides being tapered are expended also to provide enlarged portions G, H, thus securing each rung firmly in four positions. A single ladder section is formed identically with the bottom ladder section shown in Fig. 1 with the guide B omitted. According to the Provisional Specification the upper rails of each ladder section of an extensible ladder are formed as tubular T-rails, thus serving as handrails and providing the means by which a ladder section can slide in guides. secured to an adjacent ladder section.
