In an extensible ladder the upper sections 1-3 are connected by ropes 15, 16, 18, 19 which connect the top of one section to the bottom of the next but one section the ropes 15, 16 passing over pulleys on top of the intermediate sections and ropes 18, 19 passing over pulleys at the bottom of the intermediate sections the lowest section 3 being raised by a rope 13 and a winch 8.
