[Class 20(ii)] A scaffold unit comprises two ladder frames each consisting of a pair of tubular uprights 15, Fig..1 and rungs 16, each upright 15 having a series of vertically spaced openings 25 and the frames being connected by two side rails 20 having vertical end pieces 21 each, provided with a pair of vertically spaced lugs 26, Fig. 3, adapted to engage detachably in two of the openings 25. As shown in Figs. 1, 3, the uprights 15 are of square cross-section and each end piece 21 comprises a pair of perpendicular flanges 24 which engage two adjacent side faces of an upright 15..The side rails 20 are of angle section and a platform 31 rests on the flanges 30 of opposed rails. To prevent inadvertent separation of the lugs 26 from the uprights 15, leaf springs 35, Fig. 3, each secured at one end to the flange 24 of an end piece 21, are provided at their free ends with projections 36 positioned to enter one of the openings 25 when the lugs 26 are seated in position. The opposite ends of the uprights 15 are provided with pins and sockets to permit the erection of superposed frames, the sockets at the lower ends of the lowermost uprights receiving the shanks of casters 42', and the end pieces 21 may be arranged to overlap two superposed frames and thus strengthen the joint between them. A second series of openings 25<SP>1</SP> in the uprights 15 enable laterally spaced scaffold units to be joined by tie rails 20<SP>1</SP> similar to the rails 20. In a modification the uprights 115, Fig. 7 (not shown), are of circular tubing and the tie rails 120<SP>1</SP> may be used to connect two scaffold units to two intermediate single uprights 215 themselves connected by rails 120.
