[Class 3(i)] In an instructional reference device presenting or displaying information on strips of flexible material exposed as required through windows of a containing box or case, each strip is wound on a pair of reels supported on oppositely driven shafts and clutch means controlled from outside the case are provided between the reels and the shafts so that the strips may be independently wound backwards or forwards past their respective viewing windows. Each strip 9, wound on a pair of reels 8, passes over rods 10 directly under a viewing window, the reels 8 being loosely supported on shafts 7 each pair of which is oppositely driven by bevelled gear wheels, all the shafts being driven for a single driving spindle operated by a motor or a hand operated mill-wheel at one end of the case. Each reel 8 abuts against a collar at one end and at the other is provided with a clutch disc 11 having holes 13 to receive punched out dogs 14 on the reel flange 8a. The discs 11 are non-rotatable on the shafts 7 and are axially movable by means of lever arms 15 which pass round an outer groove of a socket 16 on the disc 11 having a hexagonal bore sliding over a hexagonal nut fast to the shaft 7, the lever arms 15 being actuated by a spindle 12 and move one or other of the clutch discs 11 into engagement with the reel flanges 8a, the spindle 12 being normally held in a neutral position by a clip spring 17 and having its head protruding through the case where a pointer is provided denoting reverse, neutral and forward settings. The windows may be fitted with magnifying glass and illuminating means may be provided within the case to show the strip more clearly.
