Abstract
626,158. Spray producers. TRIGGS, W. W. (Homestead Valve Manufacturing Co.). March 18, 1947, No. 7491. [Class 69 (iii)] A method of producing a spray with a core of liquid slugs, for more efficient erosive action in cleaning surfaces at a distance from the nozzle, consists in discharging a spray of liquid and vapour of a liquid under pressure (i.e. steam and water), through a zone of reduced pressure (i.e. an expansion chamber), to cause a coalescence of the spray mixture into liquid slugs 14 in the discharged spray stream 15. The mixture of liquid and vapour of a liquid is conveyed by a pipe 8 to a reducing coupling 4 where it passes via an outwardly flared nozzle 12 into an expansion chamber 13 and thence to the discharge nozzle 1. A modification is shown in Fig. 2 in which the expansion chamber is formed by the annular space 20 between the outwardly flared nozzle 21 and the outer nozzle 16 which in this case is considerably longer than the outer nozzle in Fig. 1 to produce the same effect. Specification 626,159 which describes a nozzle similar to that shown in Fig. 2, but with the addition of a supply of water to the annular chamber 20 is referred to.
