Abstract

881,320. Foam generators. ROTVAND, L. July 12, 1960 [April 7, 1960], No. 24255/60. Class 14(1). Mechanical foam is produced in a generator comprising a mixing tube 1 of substantially constant crosssection into which water under pressure from a tube 2 and emulsifying agent from a tube 5 are introduced by a centrally disposed injection nozzle 3, air suction ports 6 being provided in the tube 1 immediately downstream of the nozzle 3 and a small converging pipe 9 being mounted inside the tube 1 coaxially supported by radial blades 10 at a position downstream of the nozzle 3. The arrangement is such that the pipe 9 is positioned in a zone of the tube 1 in which the cross-section of the tube is entirely filled with foam formation and the pipe 9 speeds up the central part of the foam jet passing through the pipe 9 and slows down the peripheral part of the jet passing between the pipe 9 and tube 1. This increases the flow turbulence and improves the quality of the foam. Near the outlet of the tube 1 a second divergent. pipe 12 is centrally disposed to restore similar speeds to the central and peripheral parts of the foam jet before projection from the outlet 14. The injection nozzle 3 has a number of small inwardly directed points or projections 8 designed to produce atomisation of the outer surface layers of the jet issuing from the nozzle 3.
