Abstract

624,726. Burners. EARL, A. G. Nov. 21, 1946, No. 34517. [Classes 75(i) and 75(iii)] [Also in Group XII] A pilot flame is maintained in a tube located in front of a combustion chamber 1, Fig. 1. The tube may comprise an open ended divergent tube 3 and a wide angled conical piece 5. A specific fraction of the total air flow in the inlet part 2 passes into the tube 3 and mixes with fuel supplied through pipe 4. A stabilised flame is formed in the conical piece 5 at a point determined by the air speed. The main fuel supply is by nozzles 8 in a ring main 7 down-stream from the stabilised flame zone. The pilot flame tube may be a single conical tube of a divergence between those shown for the tubes 3, 5. The fuel may be introduced by an axial pipe introduced at the down-stream end of the tube. In another form, Fig. 3, the metered air and fuel mix in a first conical tube 3a and the pilot flame is formed in a cylindrical extension 5a of a second conical tube 3b. A disc of gauze extends across the upstream end of the cylinder 5a.
