Abstract

810,122. Burners. HAUCK MANUFACTURING CO. June 28, 1955 [July 21, 1954], No. 18652/55. Class 75(1) A burner for firing a heater tube 82 comprises a central. tube 76 having a fuel passage 72 therethrough, means to cause combustion air to whirl and to follow a helical path within the heater tube 82 and around the outside of the central tube 76 in order to delay mixing of the combustion air with the fuel thereby to prolong the flame for uniform heating of the heater tube and flame retention means 84 of larger diameter than the central tube 76 and of smaller diameter than the heater tube 82 disposed at or near the outlet end of the central tube 76, the central tube extending byond the means to cause the combustion air to whirl. The fuel passage 72 comprises an oil tube disposed within the central tube 76 and terminating in an oil tip 74. The oil is regulated by a valve 28. The central tube 76 is supplied with atomizing air and terminates in a nozzle 78. The oil tip is supported in the air nozzle 78 by pegs 114 which are slidable in the air nozzle. The central tube may be supplied with gas instead of air and in this case the oil valve 28 is closed and the oil tube 72 and oil tip are retracted a distance determined by a set screw 122 sliding in a slot in the oil tube end fitting 116. The means for whirling the combustion air comprises an adjustable vane 100 disposed in an air supply member 80 and carried by a pin 102 having a control handle outside the member 80. A scale indicating an increase in flame length for an increase in vane angle is provided. The flame retention means comprises a cylindrical nozzle 84 having a length ranging from one and a half to two and a half times its diameter; its rear end is closed by an annular plate 86 which forms with the air nozzle 78 an annular passage 88 through which combustion air enters the flame retention nozzle. The plate 86 is connected by three webs 92 to a collar 90 on the central tube 76 and the webs are cut away adjacent the air nozzle 78 so that the annular air passage 88 is not interrupted. The burner is ignited by insulated electrodes 150 arranged in the flame retention nozzle. An observation port 152 is closed by a window. Aper. tures for connection of a pressure gauge are closed by plugs 156. The heater tube 82 may be of U-shape or W-shape.
