Abstract

1411168 Pilot burners; burning crude oil COMBUSTION UNLIMITED Inc 9 Nov 1973 [15 Dec 1972] 52093/73 Headings F4F and F4T Apparatus for burning crude oil, e.g. in testing of off-shore oil wells, comprises a burner assembly including a plurality of crude oil burners and a gas pilot burner 29, a rear openended, forwardly divergent frusto-conical tubular member 45 with the burner assembly facing into the rear thereof, a front open-ended, forwardly divergent frusto-conical tubular member 50 extending forwardly from the member 45 the front end of which is spaced from the rear end of the member 50 to provide an air entry space, a rear water spray ring 60 having members 62, 63 for directing atomized water forwardly and inwardly into the flame in member 50, and a front water spray ring 65 having members 62, 63 for directing atomized water forwardly and inwardly beyond the front end of member 50 and into the flame extending therefrom. Combustion air also flows into the rear of member 45 and between the ring 65 and the front end of member 50. A member 15 supports the pilot burner 29 and the burners 18 which are equispaced therearound. Each crude oil burner comprises a tube 18 with an inlet housing 19 having a manifold 20 detachably held in a yoke 21 by a screw 22, manifold 20 carrying a burner tube 23 having a burner tip 24 and being supplied with oil through pipe 25 and with air or steam for atomizing the oil through pipe 26. The pilot burner has a shielded nozzle 30 and gas supply pipe 31 feeding an inspirator 32 to force air through an adjustable inlet 33. The pilot burner is lit by an igniter 35 comprising a flame pipe 40, push-button operated transformer 42 energizing a spark plug 41, an air inlet pipe 38 and valve 39, and a gas inlet pipe 36 and valve 37.
