Abstract
624,779. Burners. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Nov. 28, 1946, No. 35328. Convention date, Jan. 9. Addition to 619,036. [Class 75(i)] [Also in Group XII] A generator for heating and expanding air flowing thereinto under pressure, comprising a combustion chamber having at one end a fuel injection nozzle and baffle means for introducing a stream of air in a plurality of strata of varying velocities, with the stratum of lowest velocity disposed in the immediate region of the nozzle, the baffle means comprising a plurality of air chambers extending around the axis of the nozzle, is characterized in that for at least one of the air chambers the total cross sectional area of the inlet opening or openings is less than the total cross sectional area of the outlet opening or openings. Air moving under pressure in the outer chamber 5, Fig. 2, passes through annular slots 57, 58, and perforations 53 in the end wall 48 supporting the burner nozzle 60. The slots 57, 58 are calibrated to admit air at predetermined velocities to expanding annular passages 57<SP>1</SP>, 58<SP>1</SP>, the velocity of the air being greater in the passage 571; and the holes 53 admit air to an annular chamber 52 where it is expanded before passing through holes 54, 55, to the tip of the nozzle 60 and to the exposed outer part of the ignition sparking plug 61. A cylindrical wall 46, connected to the wall 48<SP>1</SP> by a curved annular wall 45 and a web portion defining air openings 47, forms a hot vaporizing surface on which the spray from the nozzle 60 impinges. Additional air at high velocity is admitted to the combustion zone through holes 41, 42, 421. In the construction shown in Fig. 4 air is supplied through tangential openings 79, 79<SP>1</SP>, in concentric cylindrical walls 73, 74, to chambers 76, 77, and thence through perforations 81, 80, the total areas of the latter perforations being greater than the total areas of the openings 79, 791. Air is also admitted through apertures 83, 831 to the annular space between the wall 70 of the combustion chamber and a cylindrical vaporizing member 78. Additional air at high velocity is supplied to the combustion zone through apertures 71 and 71<SP>1</SP>. Specification 608,031 is referred to.
