Abstract
710,287. Generating combustion products under pressure. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 2, 1951 [Oct. 3, 1950], No. 22928/51. Class 51 (1) In an air-jacketed type of combustion chamber for burning fluid fuel under pressure, for example for use in a gas turbine plant, in which the flame tube is built up of telescopic sections disposed along the length thereof, the downstream end of a flame tube section 4 comprises a radially inwardly extending portion 21b and an axially extending portion 21c which projects into the upstream end of the adjacent downstream section 5 so as to define an entrance opening of substantially cylindrical cross-section of a louvre passage for cooling and insulating air flow from the surrounding air space 2a. The outer surface 22 of the upstream end of the downstream section 5 is bevelled to avoid baffle action. The flame tube sections also have openings 14 for admission of combustion air from the surrounding air space. The flame tube sections are supported by a plurality of resilient brackets 15, and are supported co-axially with each other by means of brackets 16 on one section which cooperate with brackets 17 on the adjacent section. The upstream end of the flame tube comprises a hemispherical dome 8 having air inlets 11 through which air is projected towards the burner nozzle 13, the dome being enclosed by a shroud 9 having air metering holes 10. The portion forming the cooling and insulating air inlet louvre passages may be formed as a separate ring 21 welded to the downstream end of the flame tube section as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or the downstream end of the flame tube section itself may be suitably formed by a rolling operation. The invention is applicable to combustion chambers having either the tubular or annular type of flame tube. Proportions for the various dimensions are given.
