Abstract

Theophylline may be stabilized in aqueous solution by the interaction of theophylline, an amino acid and an alkali metal hydroxide. The theophylline may be dissolved in the aqueous alkali metal hydroxide and the amino acid added thereto, or alternatively, aqueous solutions of the alkali metal salts of theophylline or the amino acid may be used in conjunction with the appropriate free amino acid or theophylline as may be. Glycine, alanine, valine, leucine and glutamic acid are the specified amino acids and potassium and sodium the alkali metals.ALSO:Theophyllin compositions stable in aqueous solutions are prepared by mixing together in aqueous solution theophylline and an aliphatic amino acid under conditions such that one of the aforementioned substances is in the form of its alkali metal salt. The theophylline may be dissolved in aqueous alkali metal hydroxide and the amino acid added thereto, or, alternatively, aqueous solutions of alkali metal salts of theophylline or the amino acid may be used in conjunction with the appropriate free amino acid or theophylline, as may be. The aqueous solution so formed may be used as such or evaporated to dryness to form a solid composition. The composition may also include a basic aluminium salt of an amino acid. Glycine, alanine, valine, leucine and glutamic acid are specified amino acids, while potassium and sodium hydroxides are specified alkali metal hydroxides.
