Abstract

623,509. Sewing-machines. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. May 7, 1947, No. 12409. Convention date, Feb. 6. [Class 112] [Also in Group XXIV] The drive for a reciprocating trimmer knife 40 is actuated from the needle drive shaft 25, and includes a centrifugal governor 200 to vary the frequency of reciprocation of the knife with respect to that of the needle. The shaft 96, driven from the needle drive shaft by bevel gears, carries a pulley 95 having flanges 103, 104 the distance apart of which is controlled by the governor. The governor is mounted on the shaft 96 and is so arranged that increase in the shaft speed increases the distance apart of the flanges. A linkage 127, 129, 130 transmits a converse movement to the flanges 86, 87 of a pulley 85 mounted on a shaft 63 and driven from the pulley 95 by a belt 90. The shaft 63 has an eccentric 62 reciprocating the knife bar 36 through toggle links 53, 54 which are held in the straightened position by a stop 57 and a spring-loaded pin 58. With the machine running at under 1,000 stitches per minute the pulleys are in the position shown in Fig. 4 and the trimmer knife reciprocates twice as fast as the needle. Increase in the machine speed reduces the relative speed of knife to needle until they have the same speed. The trimmer bar is lifted to the inoperative position by turning a lever 70 anti-clockwise Fig. 1, to break the toggle. A stop 78 on a latch 77 pivoted on the lever co-operates with the lower side of a pin 79 to hold the lever and knife inoperative. Specification 455,001 is referred to.
