Abstract
699,657. Sewing-machines. RUSSELLLACEY MFG. CO., Inc. Sept. 20, 1949, No. 12872/51. Divided out of 699,633. Class 112. Tufting-machines.-A machine for producing reversible pile fabric as described in Specification 699,633 comprises a reciprocating needle for inserting successive doubled portions of a continuous pile yarn in a fabric base, thereby forming loops of yarn extending.from one face of the fabric, means for training the yarn to form a loop extending from the other face as each succeeding doubled portion of yarn is inserted, and means for cutting the loops extending from one or each face to form chenille ends. The machine shown is similar to an ordinary machine as regards the arrangement and operation of the needle 33, presser-foot 34, and feed-dog 35, and is arranged for cutting the loops on the upper side of the fabric only. A hook member 51, oscillated by an arm 48 linked to a disc crank 46 on the lower shaft 37 of the machine, takes the inserted loops successively from the needle, and each loop is taken from the member 51, to make room for the next, by a second hook member 52 on a shaft 54 which is oscillated by an arm engaging a cam on the shaft 37, and a third hook member 53, similarly operated, takes the loop from the member 52 and releases it, the next loop having then been formed and held by the member 51. The yarn between successive inserted loops is engaged by a finger 61 to form loops above the fabric, this finger being carried by an arm 60 on a shaft 36 oscillated by eccentric and pitman from the needle-bar shaft. A second oscillating shaft 67, linked to the shaft 36, carries a cutting blade 64 which co-operates with a sharpened upper edge on the finger 61 to cut the loops on the finger as they are moved along it by the feeding of the work. The devices beneath the work are replaced by devices similar to those above it if the lower loops are also to be cut, or the two sets of devices are interchanged if the lower loops only are to be cut.
