730,708. Sewing-machines. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 23, 1953 [Jan. 16, 1953], No. 35678/53. Class 112. A trimming mechanism in a sewing-machine comprises a reciprocatory trimmer-bar 15, an oscillatory shaft 29, a crank-arm 43 secured to the shaft, an axially slidable pin 46 carried by the crank arm for coupling the latter releasably to the trimmer-bar, a lever 55 pivoted intermediate its ends, an operative connection between one end of the lever and the pin, and means for engaging the other end of the lever for oscillating the latter. The pin is biased to engage a notch 51 in the trimmer-bar, by means of a spring 49 mounted within the crank-arm. The lever is pivoted at 56 on a removable faceplate 4 closing the head 3 of the machine. One end of the lever is forked to embrace a reduced portion of the pin. A plunger 63, slidably mounted in the faceplate, is adapted to engage the other end of the lever for withdrawing the pin from the notch against the bias of a spring 62, when a spring 51a lifts the trimmer-bar to inoperative position. A thumb-piece 52 on the lower end of the trimmer-bar serves as a means for depressing the latter to re-engage the notch and pin. A trimmer-blade 20, adjustably mounted in the trimmer-bar, co-operates with a stationary ledger-blade 25 adjustably mounted on the throatplate 26. A crank-arm 34, secured to the shaft 29, is pivoted at 35 to a pitman 36 which embraces an eccentric 38 secured to the main driving shaft 12 of the machine.
