Abstract

1,151,887. Sewing machines. UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO. 8 June, 1966 [30 June, 1965], No. 25438/66. Heading D1G. A sewing machine comprises a looper carried by a rod extending transversely of the direction of work feed and arranged to be reciprocated and oscillated for imparting loop seizing and shedding, and needle-avoiding movements to the looper, the blade or beak of which is arranged substantially parallel to the axis of the rod, and manually-operable means for partially disconnecting the looper from the rod to afford free movement of the looper longitudinally of the rod. Threaded loopers 24, 25, co-operating with respective needles 23, 23a, are releasably carried by a sleeve 26 mounted on a rod 27 extending transversely to the direction of work feed. A plate 38, slidably mounted on sleeve 26, may be depressed manually against spring bias to free sleeve 26 for rightwards movement on rod 27 to a looper-threading position. Rod 27 is keyed to a sleeve 31 journalled in fixed bearings 32. An arm 53, rigid with sleeve 31, is pivoted to a pitman 51 actuated by an eccentric on the bed shaft 12 for oscillating rod 27 to impart needle-avoiding movements to the loopers. Rod 27 is also coupled to one arm 45a of a bell crank lever, the other arm 45 of which is coupled by a for reciprocating rod 27 to impart loop taking pitman 43 to a crank pin 12a on shafts 12 and shedding movements to the loopers, the blades of which are parallel to rod 27. A member 54, formed with guide surfaces 54a for the needles 23, 23a, is adjustably secured to a member 55, one end of which is forked to embrace shaft 12 and the other end of which is pivoted on a pin 56. The latter is fixed to one end of an arm 57 pivoted at its other end on a fixed pin 59. Arm 57 is coupled by a pitman 61 to an eccentric on shaft 12, and is thereby oscillated to move the surfaces 54a into and away from needle-engaging positions.
