Abstract

418,167. Sewing - machines. FAIRWEATHER, W. C., 65, Chancery Lane, London.-(Singer Manufacturing Co.; Elizabeth, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Feb. 13, 1934, No. 4708. [Class 112.] A sewing - machine has ready means for adjustment for producing straight or zig-zag stitches, by varying the needle vibration from zero to maximum. The needle bar 12 is journalled for reciprocatory movement in a vibratory gate 14 hung on a pin 15. The gate has an arm 16 with a boss embraced by a forked arm 18 of a rocking lever 18, 20, rocked by a pitman 22. This pitman is operated by a pin 23 of a crank member 24 on a crank shaft 27. The arrangement is such that the crank pin 23 is in axial alignment with the crank shaft 27 at one of the limits of angular movement of the adjusting spindle 44, determined by engagement of the stopping pin 49 with one of the shoulders 40, 41. In this position of the crank pin, the pitman 23 remains stationary during operation of the machine so that the needle bar is not vibrated. By partly rotating the spindle 44, e.g. till the stop pin 49 engages the other of the stop shoulders 40, 41, the turning of the eccentric head 45 swings the crank member 24 about the pivot 28, shifting the crank pin and causing reciprocation of the pitman 22 to vibrate the needle bar gate when the machine is operated, to produce zig-zag stitches.
