615,944. Sewing-machines. JOHNSTON, T. W. Aug. 14, 1946, No. 24181. [Class 112) Tufting-machines; needles.-The needle 16 of a tufting-machine, or of an ordinary machine when used for tufting, has a flat or hollow to enable the looper to pass close to it and engage the loop easily. The looper 2 is carried by a member 4 mounted for lateral reciprocation by a crankpin 7, on the undershaft of the machine, engaging a slot in a member 8 rigid with the member 4 ; the crank 7 takes the place of the shuttle in an ordinary machine. The looper is curved slightly, to hold the loops on it, and is notched on the lower side at some distance from its point so that when several loops are held on the looper one of them enters the notch and is carried by the looper against a cutting blade 20 adjustably mounted on the guides for the looper plate 4.
