Abstract
153,226. Thompson, W. P., (Union Special Machine Co.). March 19, 1920. Multiple-needle machines; double-loop stitching.-In a machine having a threaded looper cooperating with each needle, a reciprocating spreading-finger associated with each looper engages the looped thread and holds it away from the looper to ensure passage of the corresponding needle between the looper thread and the looper. Four needles 4, Figs. 12 and 13, disposed in a plane at right-angles to the line of feed cooperate with four loopers 8 carried on a shaft 10, Fig. 3, which is rocked by a crank 12: on the main shaft 6 to cause the loopers to enter the needle loops in the line of feed. To give the loopers their needle-avoiding movement, the shaft 10 is also moved axially through connections from a sleeve 14 rocked about the vertical pivot 15 by an eccentric 18 on the shaft 6. The spreading fingers 38 are adjustably mounted in carriers 39 adjustable about and along a shaft 41 constrained against rocking movement, but moved axially to cause the hooked ends 50 of the fingers simultaneously to engage the looper threads l, this movement combined with the opposite needle-avoiding movements of the loopers opening out the looper threads for the next descent of the needles, Figs. 12 and 13. The shaft 41 is thus moved by the rocking sleeve 14 through connections comprising the link 46. To enable the fingers to be set close up against the work, the throat plate 35 is cut away at 51, and to allow the fingers to carry the looper threads freely laterally, the needle slots 37 in the throat plate are provided with recesses 52, as shown in Fig. 13.
