[Class 112] In a two-needle button-sewing machine having a pair of opposed rotary chain-stitch loopers and a button-clamp vibrated relatively to the needles in a direction transverse to the plane of the latter, means are provided to position the limbs of the expanded needle-loops so that each looper can carry the succeeding loop through the previous loop. In the machine shown, the needles 9 reciprocate in a fixed vertical plane, and the button clamp 33 is vibrated laterally by mechanism such as that described in Specification 21128 /12, [Class 112]. The main looper-shaft 11, driven at the same speed as the upper main shaft, carries one of the loopers 12, the other being carried by a short shaft 13 driven from the shaft 11 by gears 17, 18 and a side shaft 16. The loopers are similar, but of opposite hand, to one another and run in synchronism, each comprising a loop-seizing beak 19, a loop-spreading wing 20, and an arcuate loop-spreading shoulder 22 adapted to hold the expanded loop high enough for the beak 19 to pass through it. A loop-positioning device 23, carried by a rocking shaft 25 which is actuated against a. return spring by a cam 11a on the looper-shaft 11, gathers the limbs of the expanded needleloops 27 and carries them across the path of the needles so that the next loops 29 are formed in a position to be carried through the expanded loops by the beaks 19. Needle-guards 31 are fixed on opposite sides of the loop-positioner 23 to prevent the needles from being struck by the looper beaks, and the stem 24 of the loop-positioner 23 also guides the needles. Thread-cutting and thread-end-holding means, similar to that described in Specification 183,586, [Class 112], but with the threadengaging parts duplicated, are provided.
