Abstract

138,024. Fairweather, W., (Singer Manufacturing Co.). July 2, 1919. Sewing-machines; chain-stitching. - In a machine with a laterally vibrating needle, chainstitches are formed by means of a rotary looper the axis of which is placed forwardly of the path of the needle and which is provided with a loopspreading throat 46 between the proportion 51 and a tail 44. The thread-loop lying in the throat 46 of the looper is spread forwardly of the needle path so that when the needle descends at the side of the last-formed loop, the new loop is formed between the approaching looper point and the last loop and the looper, engaging it, carries it through the last-formed loop. In the continued rotation of the looper, the thread loop passes over the shoulder 45 and slips off the looper. It is, however, held in contact with the surface 51 by a light spring until there is no danger of its flying forward and fouling the looper point. The device is described in connexion with the button-attaching machine described in Specification 106,814.
