Abstract

845,900. Embroidery, sewing machines. ESPINOSA, P. H., and FRIAS, F. D. Jan. 23, 1957 [Dec. 1, 1956], No. 2386/57. Class 112 Embroidery, chain stitching, multi-needle machines, connecting upper and lower shafts. A sewing machine comprises a pair of needles which are disposed respectively above and below a work plate and co-operate with respective loopers to produce parallel lines of loosely formed chain stitches in two superposed layers of fabric. When said layers are subsequently separated, the respective threads are detached from the layers farthest from the needles by which they are inserted, and are retained in the layers nearest said needles, each layer thereby containing a line of loops or tufts of thread and said lines being identical with each other. A lower driven shaft 34 is connected by a vertical shaft 55 and gearing to an upper shaft 1. Shafts 1 and 34 carry crank discs 2 and 37 coupled by connecting rods 3 and 38 to vertically reciprocating heads 4 and 39 which carry needle bars 8 and 48 for an upper needle 59 and lower needle 60. Heads 4 and 39 are coupled by links 10 and 42 to slides 11 and 44 adapted thereby to reciprocate on fixed horizontal rods 24A and 47B. A crosshead 13 is vertically slidable in slide 11 and is also horizontally slidable in a clamp 15 fixed to a presser bar 16 carrying a presser foot 22. Crosslead 13 carries a looper 14 adapted to cooperate with needle 60, and the arrangement is such that when the presser bar is lifted, by a lever 20 against the bias of a spring 18, looper 14 is also lifted. Slide 44 carries a looper 45 adapted to co-operate with needle 59. Heads 4 and 39 carry thread-guides 6 and 40, needle bars 8 and 48 carry thread-guides 26 and 41, and slides 11 and 44 carry thread-guides 12 and 43 disposed respectively between pairs of fixed thread guides 25 and 49. The upper thread passes from a spool on a holder 30 through guides 27, 6, 12, 25 and 26 to needle 59, and the lower thread passes from a spool on a holder 50 through guides 40, 43, 49 and 41 to needle 60.
