Abstract
800,240. Sewing machines. PATHE TOOL MANUFACTURING CO., Inc. April 30, 1956 [May 18, 1955], No. 13153/56. Class 112 In a multi-needle sewing machine in which the needles reciprocate identically simultaneously and co-operate with shuttles, all of which are mounted on a reciprocating sliding carriage, to effect parallel straight stitch lines when the work is fed in a straight line through the machine a plurality of needles effecting immediately adjacent stitch lines are arranged in a plane disposed obliquely with respect to said lines, and the movement of said carriage is parallel to said plane. A needle bar 15, slidably mounted in. a bushing 24, carries two parallel rows of needles 18, 18<SP>1</SP> arranged to pass through throats 17, 17<SP>1</SP> in a work-supporting plate 16. The needles are secured by forwardlyfacing screws 20, 20<SP>1</SP>, access to the rear screws being afforded by a transverse channel 28 in the needle bar. The needles are staggered to effect parallel lines 19, 19<SP>1</SP> of stitching. Plate 16 is supported by the upper edges of angle bars 23, each of which is secured by screws 25, 25<SP>1</SP> to a pair of fixed transverse bars 21, 22. Bars 23 are all disposed parallel to a line joining a pair of adjacent needles 18, 18<SP>1</SP>, said bars being thereby inclined to the stitch lines 19, 19<SP>1</SP>. Each pair of adjacent bars 23 provides a raceway for a shuttle-holding bar 26 carrying a pair of shuttle-holding baskets 27, 27<SP>1</SP> which follow each other in close proximity. Each bar 23 is provided at each needle position therealong with a needle clearance slot 23<SP>1</SP> and a niche 23<SP>11</SP> serving as a guide for the shuttle bobbin thread. It is stated that the arrangement affords close spacing of the stitch lines without sacrifice in shuttle size. In a modification, Fig. 8, the front and rear rows of needles are arranged in respective pairs of parallel lines C, D and E, F. The arrangement may also be such that each shuttle bar 26 carries three or more shuttles. Each shuttle bar 26 is detachably mounted by means of pins 29, 29<SP>1</SP> on the front and rear bars 30, 31 of a frame fixed to rods 33 which are slidably mounted in the bars 21, 22. Reciprocation of the shuttles is effected from an eccentric 36 mounted on a driving shaft 51, the eccentric strap 36<SP>1</SP> being connected to a lever 42, and the latter being connected by a link 41 to one arm 43 of a bell crank lever, the other arm 44 of which is connected to a rod 33. Reciprocation of the needles is effected from an eccentric 37 mounted on the driving shaft, the eccentric strap 37<SP>1</SP> being connected to one arm 48 of a bell crank lever the other arm 49 of which is connected by a link 50 to the needle bar 15.
