A multi-needle sewing machine, especially adapted for sewing mattresses or embroidery, comprises at least one row of needles co-operating with a row of shuttles mounted for rotation about a common axis, each shuttle being supported in an individual holder mounted for pivotal movement from an operative position to a position affording access to the bobbin. As shown, a driving shaft 3 in an embroidery machine pivotally carries a plurality of pairs of members 5 rotatably supporting shuttles S the bodies S' of which have peripheral gear teeth 4 meshing with a gear 2 rigid with shaft 3. A circumferential groove S in body S' is engaged by a pair of pins 7 journalled on member 5, and a circumferential rib 9 on gear 2. Members 5 may be pivoted outwards from their operative positions to provide access to the bobbin carriers S" mounted therein. The shuttles co-operate with respective horizontal needles N mounted on a reciprocating bar 21. The work M passes between a vertical surface and a spring-biassed presser plate 20. Needle thread passes from a tensioner 31 to guides 32 and 33 positioned one on each side of a rotary shaft 24 the thread returning -from guide 33 to guide 32 on its way to the needle. The doubled thread between said guides is acted upon by a rotary take-up member 25 generally L-shaped in cross section and rigid with shaft 24. Work M is fed longitudinally, while shaft 3, needle bar 21 and shaft 24 are shifted laterally as a unit in accordance with the pattern requirements.
